A breakfast fit for a king in Kampala

Nyama choma is one of the delights at this restaurant.
Today, twenty thousand bob for lunch in town is just about the going rate for a worthwhile meal; computed on a monthly basis, this would come to around a cool half a million shillings a month! One can only shudder and wonder how Kampalans can afford this amount of money not to mention how many, and food can hardly be rated as being a luxury.
The alternative is to seek out those itinerant female cooks who have seemingly mastered the art of cooking affordable local food that has the advantage of being delivered door to door, on a fairly consistent basis and continue to sell their food in the offices without much let up.
However, even they do not come cheap and gone forever are the days of the food of lukumi lukumi. Today a fiver in the city will barely buy one plate of katogo which is still a bargain compared to what the established joints charge for a meal.
On top of this, finding decent and affordable lunch in midtown Kampala is never easy and you can perish the thought if you reckon you can pull up in your fancy ride and park in the front of the establishment.
Value for money
Getting down to brass tacks, some of our friends have been regaling us with their being as pleased as punch because they are still able to have an affordable lunch on a daily basis, and at a central and convenient location to boot. I can safely state that the Central Restaurant buffet is very much on the money, and while not being lavish, it still manages to offer good variety and value for money.
We lost count of the number of items on offer though be assured of having chicken, beef, rice, pasta, Irish potatoes, vegetables, matooke etc. We were also very impressed with the décor and general layout of the place. It is smart and tastefully done up, all in all a nice ambience in which to dine.
In addition to the buffet, there is also an extensive a la carte menu that offers Indian, Continental as well as nyama choma. We have checked the breakfast that was by any standard enormous. Comprising eggs of your choice, two sausages, bacon, toast, baked beans, a glass of juice and coffee etc and worth every penny.
The food is good and well prepared and one can only wonder as to why more food vendors do not emulate this model and charge the same fare rather than Shs20, 000.
