Actress shoots documentary about street children
This year will not only see Sonia Uwimbabazi emerge as an award winning actress at the Hillywood 2012 Silverback Awards for her movie “Beyond the sight”, but it will also see her launch her latest documentary.
The documentary film, “Les Enfants de Dieu”, is a tale of the appalling living conditions of homeless children on the streets of Rwanda – with the shootings already in progress.
“Les Enfants de Dieu” or ‘Children of God’ is named after Les Enfants de Dieu Orphanage, a secular non-profit organisation assisting street children in Kigali.
“The movie will capture the hearts and spirits of Rwandans. We have gathered a remarkable number of street children who narrate their ordeals. They talk about the reasons why they escaped from their homes and opted for the street life,” Uwimbabazi told to The New Times in an interview.
“I hope the movie will go a long way in raising public awareness about the dangers of street life – and to help these children have a normal life. We look forward to its release” she adds.
“It’s really inspiring spending time chatting with these young people. Surprisingly, most of them have big dreams and they hope to go back to school and achieve their dreams,” the actress narrates.
“I must say thanks and congratulations to the Rwandan government for supporting these children, by creating homes and vocational training to provide opportunities for them [street children] to quit the street, make a difference in their lives and contribute to the country’s development.”
Uwimbabazi joined the film industry in 2005 and has acted in various movies including, “Isugi” – about a young 1994 Genocide survivor –, “We are all Rwandans” and “Hey Mr. DJ”.
“It’s so awesome seeing people participate in this campaign, and I’m excited to be part of those who choose to use their influence in society to make a difference,” says Uwimbabazi.
Apart from acting, this Rwandan actress-cum-model is also a movie writer. She wrote and directed “Beyond the sight”, one of the best movies at the Rwanda Film Festival 2012. She has also graced various local fashion shows.
