AfDB to evaluate its projects in Uganda

A team of nine members of the board of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group will this week visit Uganda to consult with the government on the bank’s funded programmes in the country.

The six-day visit scheduled for between February 23 and 28 will dwell on AfDB-supported policies and programmes to evaluate their implementation and impact.

Uganda is one of the major beneficiaries of the bank’s resources under the African Development Fund, the group’s concessional lending arm, through which low-income member countries are able to borrow for development project financing at very low interest rates.

The bank’s current country strategy for Uganda focuses on two main areas including infrastructure development and improving capacity skills development for poverty reduction.

Funded portfolio
The AfDB Fund has to date financed projects totaling to $2.5 billion in Uganda. The current AfDB-supported portfolio in the country consists of 22 operations with a total value of $1.2 billion, largely for infrastructure development.

Of this, $302 million is for road infrastructure, $295 million for agriculture, $243 million for energy, $225 million for social sector infrastructure and $136 million for water and sanitation.

The team will is expected to visit among other AfDB supported projects in Jinja, including the Bujagali hydropower and transmission line projects and others supporting markets and agricultural trade improvement and education.
