Body of Stone Roses fan who went missing after reunion gig found in canal
A Stone Roses fan who vanished in mysterious circumstances just hours after watching the band’s first reunion gig was found dead in a canal today.
Barman Chris Brahney, 22, went missing on Friday 29 June after telling friends he had lost his mobile phone following the concert and was trying to find it.
His disappearance sparked a huge police manhunt with hundreds of volunteers turning out to search for Chris – and with the 90s band itself headed by singer Ian Brown issuing a public appeal for help.
Chris’ parents, Stuart Brahney, 56, a quantity surveyor and Jane, 48, a headmistress, also begged the public for help saying they were ‘going through every parents’ worst nightmare.’
A Facebook site appealing for information attracted 110,000 members.
Today police said Chris’s body had been found in the Manchester Ship Canal near the new BBC HQ at Media City in Salford, Greater Manchester – almost five miles from Heaton Park, where he was last seen alive.
A post mortem examination is due to take place today. A police tent was placed at the scene while forensic officers searched the area for clues.
Last Friday friends and family retraced Chis’ last known steps – exactly a week after he disappeared at 11.30pm following the first of the three Roses concerts.
Thousands of posters and flyers urging for information about Chris’ whereabouts were distributed across Greater Manchester by volunteers.
Police said there had also been possible sightings of Chris at the park-and-ride site in Bowlee, Middleton. He is thought to have been seen getting off a bus at the site and also spoke to a group of young women telling them he had lost his phone and his friends.
A further possible sighting of Chris has been reported at Maccabi Sport Centre on Bury Old Road at about 12.05am. Police believe his missing phone could be in Edinburgh.
