BUJUMBURA (Reuters) – Burundi President Pierre Nkurunziza has sacked six ministers from his cabinet for poor performance, his spokesman said.

Minister of Public Security Alain Guillaume Bunyoni, Foreign Affairs Minister Augustin Nsanze, Justice Minister Ancilla Ntakaburimvo, Planning and Communal Development Minister Pierre Mupira, and Minister of Public Works and Transport Saidi Kibeya were all shown the door.

“As he promised to the Burundian people and after evaluation of the cabinet, the president of the republic decided to replace some ministers,” Nkurunziza’s spokesman, Leonidas Hatungimana told reporters late on Monday.

When he was sworn in for his five-year second term, President Nkurunziza said that each government official will report on tasks accomplished every six months, adding that those who failed to do so would be fired.

In power since 2005, Nkurunziza was sworn in for second term after winning 2010 elections by a wide margin after the opposition boycotted the polls.
