Julia Gillard brought to heel … Australian PM takes a tumble after laying wreath at Gandhi’s grave

By

Julia Gillard has made headlines in Australia over “yet another shoe slip up” after falling spectacularly near the Gandhi Memorial in New Delhi.

Ms Gillard was unhurt and immediately declared she was “fine” despite landing on her face after her heel caught in soft grass.

Laughing off the incident, she noted to a male journalist who asked her about it that he may not appreciate “the logistics” of wearing heels on grass.

All bodes well for Ms Gillard after she finishes laying a wreath at Mahatma Gandhi’s cremation site

Providing a good-natured commentary on the incident, she said: “For men who get to wear flat shoes all day every day, if you wear a heel it can get embedded in soft grass. And then when you pull your foot out, the shoe doesn’t come – and then the rest of it is as you saw.”

Ms Gillard, Australia’s first female prime minister, has become notorious for her growing number of shoe mishaps.

She slipped out of a high heel two months ago in Sydney while walking onstage to launch a cyber safety programme.

She may be able to hold her head high against political opposition, but Ms Gillard succumbs to gravity like anyone else

Most famously, she lost a shoe while being shuffled away from Aboriginal protesters in Canberraon Australia Day in January. The protesters later brandished the shoe – a dark blue, size 36 Midas pump – and considered selling it on eBay.

Despite fetching bids of £1,400, the shoe was later returned to the Prime Minister.

The politician lies on the ground, taken aback by her quick fall, as her associates move in to help

Ms Gillard’s fall on Wednesday occurred as she was on her way to address the Australian media after laying a wreath at the site of Gandhi’s cremation.
