The former Minister for General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM), Prof. Khiddu Makubuya, has handed over his office to Mr Pius Bigirimana, the permanent secretary of the OPM, with a call to whoever will come after him to settle the Mabira Forest issue.
During the handover yesterday, Prof. Makubuya said: “Mabira has to get out of the way. We had discussed it with the Cabinet Committee but someone has to follow it up to ensure that they reach a conclusion.”
Prof. Makubuya was the chairperson of the cabinet sub-committee that was instituted to handle the Mabira Forest issue.
Last year, President Museveni made it clear that he was not ready to listen to appeals for him to drop his single-minded determination to give 7,100 hectares of Mabira Central Forest Reserve to the Mehta Group to grow sugarcane.
The former minister said his choice to step down was the best option for everyone. “I have a background as a lawyer. So I would have filed a suit. But when I looked at the overall picture, resigning was the best thing to do,” he said.
