Taifa Stars take giant leap in FIFA rankings
Tanzania’s gradual improvement in the FIFA World Football rankings has continued this month after the Taifa Stars leapt 12 places.
According to the latest rankings released on Wednesday in Zurich, Switzerland, Tanzania climbed up to 127th position from last month’s 139th place, after amassing 253 points, 39 points up from the previous release.Tanzania also moved 12 places in the continental rankings and now rest on 39th position.
The Taifa Stars played three matches during the period, of which they recorded one win, one defeat and one draw. They lost 2-0 to Ivory Coast before beating Gambia 2-1 in the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Poulsen’s men then played out a 1-1 with Mozambique in the CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match but crashed out after losing out on penalties. The rise will be a boost for the Danish tactician Kim Poulsen who took charge of the senior national team, Taifa Stars, shortly before last month’s 2014 FIFA World Cup and CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
A total of 133 international ‘A’ matches have been played in recent weeks, made up of 31 EURO 2012 matches, 60 qualifiers for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil, 15 CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, and 27 friendlies. All of these contests have clearly reshuffled the global ladder, with only 22 of the 208 ranked teams holding their position from the previous month, while 85 teams have moved up the table and 101 have dropped at least one place.
Spain, meanwhile, made history by securing a third straight international tournament title, and their sustained success has seen them gain 235 points.Germany are up into second, leapfrogging Uruguay, while England have climbed two spots into fourth, after they reached the quarter-finals at Poland and Ukraine.
Elsewhere, Portugal are up five places into fifth while Euro 2012 finalists Italy have risen six places. Italy are now placed sixth in the rankings after an impressive Euro 2012 campaign which ultimately ended in a 4-0 defeat to Spain in the final.Netherlands, who failed to earn a point in their Euro 2012 group, are down to eighth.Brazil, who are down six spots to 11th, currently sit in their lowest position since the start of the FIFA World Rankings
