Tanzanian engineers and contractors warned about shoddy development projects

The government said yesterday legal action would be taken against engineers and contractors submitting poor quality development works in the country.

Same East MP Anne Kilango (CCM)
The warning was given in parliament yesterday by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government) Aggrey Mwanri.
The deputy minister was responding to a supplementary question from Same East MP Anne Kilango (CCM), who sought government’s position on the contractors of government hospitals and health centres, who submitted below standard projects.
The deputy minister said the government had already identified consulting engineers, who had been poorly executing their projects leading to unnecessary inconveniences in the implementation of development projects.
For her part, Special Seats MP Betty Machangu (CCM) wanted to know the progress on the upgrading of Mawenzi hospital to a referral status.
Responding, Mwanri said the government had already recommended all regional hospitals to be upgraded and regional consultative committees had been assigned to work on the matter.
He said they had communicated with the Ministry of Works to take stern measures against consulting engineers from Tanzania Building Agency (TBA) commissioned to supervise the construction of Himo district hospital, the project proved to be below standard.
According to the deputy minister, poorly constructed structures of Himo district hospital were caused by poor supervision on TBA consulting engineers, noting that “the responsible engineers must be held accountable.”
