Compassion International, a faith-based NGO, yesterday, donated Rwf8.2 million to a group of vulnerable children from Kigali City to start-up income generating projects.
The donation was handed to the beneficiaries at the Methodist Church in Gikondo Sector, Kicukiro District during a ceremony where 57 children were award certificates for completing vocational training in various skills.

Compassion International, in partnership with the Methodist Church have been training the youth in mechanical engineering, wielding, tailoring, construction, carpentry and driving.

Sylvain Rurangwa, the Partnership Supervisor at Compassion said; “The donation is aimed at helping the beneficiaries to form cooperatives in order to practice what they have been taught and improve their living standards.”
Pastor Drosera Mukamurenzi of the Methodist Church urged the youth to put to good use the acquired skills and knowledge and to always strive for the sustainable development of the country.

Mukamurenzi told The New Times that the training was aimed at fighting poverty and unemployment among the beneficiaries adding that their church will continue to advise them on becoming responsible and self-reliant citizens.

“I thank Compassion International and the church for training us because this will change our lives socially and economically,” Theoneste Iyakaremye, one of the beneficiaries, said.

Rurangwa said that Compassion will donate over Rwf168million to 604 vulnerable children across the country to help them form cooperatives.
