Zanzibar sets restriction on Eid celebrations

By

Authorities in Zanzibar announced, Friday that Eid celebrations will not go beyond 6 p.m and 10 p.m, for children and adults respectively.

The restrictions are new efforts to control escalating moral decay in Zanzibar. The annual Eid el Fitr celebrations that mark the end of Ramadhan and Eid el adha which marks the end of pilgrimage are important festivals in Zanzibar.

The restriction also announced by public Zanzibar public electronic media, said that Police, Zanzibar Municipal Council staff, and the electricity department will work together to implement the ban. “Electricity will be switched-off at 10p.m in all public grounds,” it says.

Many people particularly youths on streets have condemned the government restriction which comes after increasing complaints from parents and Muslim clerics.
